Why Does The EU Need ETIAS Approval?

In his 2016 State of the Union address, President Juncker said:
“We need to know who is crossing our borders. This way, we will know who travels to Europe before they even get here.”

The main reason for ETIAS approval is security. With increased terrorism and international travel risks, the EU wants to balance safety and free movement within member states.

The ETIAS is a security system for the Schengen Area that will notify authorities if a person is deemed a threat. It will gather data & information to determine this and work based on an algorithm.

This will lead to the person being denied entry and, therefore, avoid the threat of being present inside the EU’s borders. It will simply deal with a problem before it is even there.

But ETIAS comes with a host of benefits- such as making travel to the EU more secure. It will also assist citizens who need to get Authorised by providing visa-free travel to some countries, simplifying procedures at the border and :

• Reduce procedures and application times

A new regulation has been proposed to make visa application processes in the UE easier and faster.

The European Parliament has proposed a new regulation to make the EU application process for visas and residence permits easier, faster, and more transparent. The regulation would lower costs and simplify work for businesses by introducing a fast-track system that will reduce the cost of applying for visas by 12 percent.

• Improve the management of EU country borders

European Union countries have struggled to manage the movement and residence of migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees within their borders.

The EU is always trying to streamline and improve its border management. Illegal immigration and the stay of illegal immigrants have adversely affected the European economy.

Who Will Need ETIAS?

ETIAS is a new automated system that will allow citizens of countries with a visa-free travel arrangement to the EU to apply for an ETIAS clearance.

The following 63 countries will need ETIAS authorization:

Until the system’s launch, more countries might be added to this list. For the time being, citizens of these countries need to get ETIAS authorization before entering any EU country.

How Will the ETIAS Process Work?

Filling out the application form

The ETIAS application should take no more than 10 mins to complete, as it will be an online form. It will ask you for your citizenship and present you with the different fields that need to be filled depending on your nationality.

  • Last name
  • Last name at birth
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
• Information regarding your citizenship
• Home address
• Email
• Phone number
• Education
• Work experience
• First EU country you intend to visit.
• Background and eligibility questions will ask about your past medical issues, travel to any war countries or refugee camps you might’ve been deported or rejected from, and criminal records.
• EU citizens under 18 must-have travel authorization from their parents or guardians when traveling to the EU.
• To travel to the EU as a family member of an EU citizen from another country, you must submit proof of relationship, residence card, and other background information.

Submitting the ETIAS Online

When your application is processed, you must pay and submit the fee. The system will do the following:

• Check if the information you gave was correct.
• Check your eligibility.
• Check your risk factors.

You must enter all the information correctly and be eligible to apply. Once submitted, the ETIAS application should take a few minutes to process.

ETIAS refers to an entry-exit system for travelers from countries with a high potential for visa risks. If your background check discovers discrepancies, you will be told and given further information about the process on ETIA’s official website.

How Much Will ETIAS Cost?

ETIAS or the Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System will not be too expensive. It is anticipated that ETIAS will cost €7 for each application for adult people over 18 years old, with no fees for anyone under 18.

The validity of the ETIAS is for three years, so the visa needs to be renewed.
Your payment can be made with a debit or credit card. As soon as your payment is made, it will start processing and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

The System Has Rejected Your ETIAS Application

Yes, any ETIAS application can be denied if there is anything wrong with it, like the following:

• The person applying has used a travel document reported as lost, stolen, misappropriated, or invalidated in the Schengen Information System – SIS II.
  The applicant may pose a security risk for the citizens and travelers of the Schengen Area.
• The applicant poses a risk of illegal immigration. The applicant’s name and age are not provided, leaving the possibility that they may be a minor.
• The applicant poses a high infectious risk and could pose a danger if they work with children or the elderly.
• An applicant is someone who has an alert in the system to refuse entry and stay.
• The applicant did not reply to requests for additional information or documentation within the deadline.
• The applicant did not complete an interview after being asked to attend.

A travel authorization can be denied if the authority is unsatisfied with the information given and the applicant cannot provide sufficient evidence to support the travel.
